Newsletter #31 | July 2024

When you teach a child to garden, you show them how to grow their future  Unknown

Our leading photo is from our hugely successful Terrariums for Kids workshop run by committee member Melissa Styles on the 12th July in the school holidays. Having the newly erected greenhouse available proved useful as a shelter from the wet weather. All the materials were supplied and the children were able to take home a completed terrarium afterwards. We think this is a superb way to spark a child's interest in gardening: something we value highly in our community garden as a life-long and life-changing skill. For those who are not sure what terrariums are here is a quick description.

A terrarium (plural: terraria or terrariums) is an enclosed or mostly-enclosed growing environment for plants. A terrarium encloses an environment with high humidity and moist soil.

Many thanks to Melissa and her assistants and parents for gathering all the materials and helping on the day.

Useful tips from the Chair

Please have a look around for any buckets and containers that might pool water, and tip them upside down. This will help prevent any nasty bugs from laying eggs and harbouring diseases.

Please also make use of the long handled hoes for weeding to save people from kneeling in the wet ground and save your backs.

Pro tip: you don't have to pull an entire root system out of the ground when weeding. Leaving the roots of some plants in the grounds helps with aeration and soil improvement over time. Obviously this doesn't apply to some more invasive species like kikuyu 😂
