Our garden grows and grows!

Another great day with Mid Coast Sustainability Inc (MCS) committee and members on Sunday 18th September. We held a ‘leasing ceremony’ at which those community members who have chosen to lease a garden bed were allotted their beds. These beds are clearly numbered N (north) 1-16 and S (south) 1-16. We were very lucky to have a good almost 2 hours rain free for the first plantings of seeds and seedlings. Some families have already filled their beds with a wonderful collection of summer vegies and herbs, some have just started while they plan what else to grow and others are yet to start. The regular rain is a blessing, reducing the need for regular visits to water but we look forward to some sunny days to get things really growing. The fencing of this area will hopefully be completed by late October/early November with our great group of volunteers needing a bit of a break before they tackle this big task. Once completed this area will only be accessible to leaseholders. A reminder that the raised beds are $80/year plus the $20/year membership, total $100/year. Leased a garden beds are 2.64 m², and leasing includes a soil-filled bed and water for 12 months. More beds will be available later in October. Simply apply via our website to join the waiting list. Feedback on this is welcomed.

Orchard expanding

The fruit orchard area has expanded with the recent planting of citrus adding to the apples, pears, peaches and nectarines previously planted. A selection of native fruit and nut trees are still on the agenda for future planting.

Coming up

Nature Play Day

SWCG is participating in the free Nature Play Day at Seaford Meadows Scout Hall Saturday 8th October 10-1pm.

We will have seed bomb making for children. Seed bombs were originally a guerrilla gardening technique. Once dried the seed bombs were scattered in bare areas creating patches of beauty and habitats for pollinators. It is also a fun activity for children with seed bombs scattered in their own garden. As well as lots of nature play activities for kids there will be interactive stalls, a free sausage sizzle and a Welcome To Country smoking ceremony

Bunnings BBQ Our next Bunnings BBQ fundraiser is Saturday November 19th. If you have time to volunteer for an hour or two, we’ll be looking for helpers. Please email us if you can help. The funds we raise from this goes directly to help with infrastructure not covered by the grant like fencing and sheds.

Nature Festival 2022 From the 6-16th October, this will be 10 days of over 300 events, encounters, and experiences for all ages and interests to celebrate our love of nature, including the first ever nature-based Film Festival in South Australia. Lots of creative ways to connect with

nature for young and old. Find out more...
