The Seaford Community Garden Needs You!
We are in the early stages of designing the garden and your input on designing the layout is very welcome. Please get in touch with a message on our Facebook or website and Jack or Nicole will be pleased to pass on your ideas. Or come along to our design workshops in Jan 2022.
The committee has been busy through Nov/Dec last year. The first instalment of the Green Adelaide Grassroots grant has been paid into our Bendigo Bank a/c and negotiation for the lease of the Community Garden has been progressing with the Onkaparinga Council. We visited Marino Community Garden recently to collect ideas and listen to their experiences over their first 5 years. A visit to the North Brighton Community Garden is planned for early January.
Recent decisions by the committee
The area between Eldercare and Seaford CFS on Seaford Rd has been chosen as the preferred garden site.
We've decided to build a small shed for storage of tools etc on the garden site. Please let us know if you have one in good/fair condition you would like to donate.
Membership - General membership will be open to all for $20/year. Raised garden beds will be available for members to rent at $80/year. Membership will run from 1st July to 30th June and we hope to open applications for membership in January 2022. If necessary, a waiting list will be established for garden bed rental with Onkaparinga residents given first preference. Raised beds will be complete with frame, garden soil, irrigation and water for the year.
There are a few ways to become involved in the project. Volunteers are needed to run a Bunnings BBQ to raise funds for incidental expenses not covered by the grant and a working bee to construct and install garden beds will be one of the first items on the agenda. If you have good quality garden tools to donate we'd love to hear from you.
Garden design workshops are planned for Jan/Feb. If you would like to participate or just send in ideas we'd love to hear from you.
We are hoping to get started on the site by February 2022.
Breaking news
We have just received a donation of brand new garden tools from Spear and Jackson. Many thanks to Mark Rowley for his help in making this donation possible and to Tony for collecting and storing the tools until we have a shed available. Check out the post on our Facebook page for photos of the tools donated.
The Seaford Community Garden Committee
A huge thank you to the small group of people who have taken on the role of getting the project off the ground. Our chair, Jack Clarke got the ball rolling with a comprehensive overall plan for the Seaford Community Garden and Urban Biodiversity project and has brought together all the key stakeholders for this excellent project, culminating in a grant of approx. $62,000 from the Green Adelaide Board. The rest of the committee is Kaarin Wilkinson, Nicole Fickling, Tony Watkin, Lisa Schuyler, Zoe Brooks, Owen Symes, Julia Hayden and Wayne Good. If you have any questions or ideas please contact Jack or Nicole via Facebook or our website. Meanwhile, dust off those work boots, gardening gloves, aprons, BBQ tongs and trailers - we will be needing them (and you) soon! We wish you a happy and safe holiday period and look forward to meeting everyone early in the new year!
